Help! My Child Won’t Stop Coughing!

Some coughing is completely normal. Something went down the wrong pipe. You pass through some smoke, or a leaky car exhaust. Sometimes kids will cough from exercising in the cold. Over and done with in a few minutes. No worries.

Sometimes your child has a cold, and the cough brings up phlegm. Green + yellow does not equal antibiotics. Antibiotics won’t help; it’s viral. The phlegm is actually part of the healing process. Offer liquids and warm fluids to keep your child more comfortable.
So, when should you call the doctor?
Some coughs can be self-treated, but you’ll need a diagnosis from your pediatrician first. Seasonal or pet allergies may respond well to antihistamines. Asthma may require medication delivered via an inhaler. This is where your pediatric partnership pays off.
Emergency situations rely on you to seek help for your little one. Don’t wait to call if your child has trouble breathing. Seek immediate medical attention if your child struggles for each breath, has tight breathing and can’t speak or cry, their lips are blue, or they become unresponsive. Call 911.
